for PhD fellowships

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) awards PhD fellowships of 2 to 3.5 years to outstanding junior scientists worldwide who wish to pursue an ambitious PhD project in basic biomedical research in an internationally leading laboratory.

The peer-review selection process evaluates the applicant's achievements, as well as the scientific quality of the project and host laboratory. The process is highly competitive, with less than 10% of applicants receiving a fellowship.

The online application for the PhD fellowship opens one month before the respective deadlines 1 February, 1 June and 1 October.


and Travel grants

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) awards travel grants of up to three months duration to MD and PhD students, as well as postdoctoral researchers from all over the world. The BIF supports them if they conduct experimental projects in basic biomedical research and want to pursue short-term research stays or attend practical courses relevant to their projects in Europe or overseas.

The programme also enables graduate students and their potential supervisors to evaluate the scientific and personal fit before starting a PhD project abroad.


MD fellowships

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) awards MD fellowships of up to 18 months to outstanding medical students to pursue ambitious, experimental projects in basic biomedical research worldwide. Fellowship holders must study human medicine in Germany and initially change cities and institutions for at least 10 to maximum 12 consecutive months to work in an internationally renowned laboratory.

The programme also enables graduate students and their potential supervisors to evaluate the scientific and personal fit before starting a PhD project abroad.

The online application for the MD fellowship opens one month before the respective deadlines 1 February, 1 June and 1 October.
